2012 TOMATO TRIALS RESULTS SUMMARY

Joyce A: Roma - 29 (pictured in Wall O'Water)
Linda F: Sweet 100 - 122
Joyce A: Early Girl - 62
Dianne C: Other (Sungold) - 284
What aides were used?
turns for calcium supply to prevent blossom end rot, using greenhouse for spring and fall season extenders, using Wall O'Water in beginning of season, using self-watering pots to ensure uniform soil moisture, using wagon to move plant inside if frost expected, using fertilizer as tomatoes are heavy feeders (suggest 1/2 strength at every watering), applying bone meal, compost/manure tea for soil microbes and fertilizer, dolomite lime for calcium and magnesium supply, Epsom salt for magnesium and sulfur micro nutrients (1 tbsp per gallon water), coffee grounds, sea soil for soil microbes and fertilizer, some pruning to direct energy to ripening fruit.
C's Honorable Mention, her Tomaccio with total tomatoes harvested: 269 all grown outside in a self-watering pot in a protected South exposure along rock wall of home. No top pruning, just the shoots in vee of stems. Added water every 3 days.
Survived brutal hail storm in August. Fertilized twice in June with Bloom Booster and that was it. Did not apply chemicals. Dianne C.comments:
"Fabulous tomato, sweet and has a distinct tomato taste. Skin is not as thick as a lot of cherry tomatoes. Tomaccio wins over Sungold in a taste test."
Four of our five listed winning members grew their tomatoes outside!
Of all plants in trial, 18 were grown outside, and 7 in greenhouses, 9 were grown in ground or hanging and 16 were in self-watering pots!
Be wary of heat in greenhouses as this causes flowers to drop prematurely.
